Judy’s Glass Candy

Judy’s Glass Candy- Makes about 2lbs of candy

Ingredients:
3 3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 cup water
5 drops food coloring
1 dram/1 teaspoon flavoring
1/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions:
Spray Pam liberally over 2-3 shiny cookie sheets depending on how thin you want your candies. Set aside. Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in a heavy saucepan. Cook to hard crack stage, 290 °, remove from heat. Stir in flavoring and food coloring. The mixture will still be bubbly at this point. Spread mixture over the cookie sheets. Use a spatula to smooth and thin it. You want to get to around 1/8 inch thick if possible. Sometimes it’s not, it just depends on how much mixture is in each pan. Let cool completely.

After a few hours or overnight, take a meat cleaver and give the surface a sharp tap. You’ll see the candy breaking like glass in a spiderweb type of pattern. Continue tapping until the pieces are the size you prefer. With hard candy , remember, smaller is usually better. Put the pieces into a Ziploc bag or closed container with the powdered sugar. Shake to coat. These usually will last a month or two if kept in an airtight container. If it’s super humid they may not last as long, but are still pretty resilient.
